Admissions
Teachers at the Te Kura Whaiora ki te Tonga / Southern Health School work with ākonga, their families and their schools, to provide an adapted programme that supports ākonga learning during their illness and recovery. Who can be admitted to the school?
1. Year 0-13 students with high health needs identified by a qualified medical practitioner specialising in the condition and who are undergoing:
a. An active treatment programme for their medical condition
OR
b. A health funded mental health programme
2. Also students must be: (at least one of these)
a. In hospital and /or recuperating or rehabilitating for more than 10 school days
b. Likely to have [or had] six hospital admissions in a 12 month period
c. Absent from school for more than 40 school days in any one school year

Obtaining your child’s attendance record is essential for the admission process, as it helps us assess their educational needs during their health-related absence. Please request this record from your child’s current school to ensure a smooth application.

Ensure your child’s attendance record includes details of any significant absences and is signed or stamped by their current school. Additionally, review each form carefully to confirm all required sections are completed accurately, and obtain the necessary signatures to avoid processing delays.

If your child does not have a regular school
The Te Tāhuhu o te Mātauranga / Ministry of Education will consider whether to approve a Section 37 Agreement with you for special education. If it is required a copy of the Section 37 Agreement may be obtained from us or from the Ministry of Education. We will forward the completed form to the Ministry if we consider the above criteria are met.
